稂，狼尾草。莠，狗尾草。不稂不莠本指田中沒有野草。語出《詩經．小雅．大田》：「既方既皁，既堅既好，不稂不莠。」後比喻不成材、沒出息。《紅樓夢．第八四回》：「但只一件，姑娘也要好，第一要他自己學好纔好，不然，不稂不莠的反倒耽誤了人家的女孩兒，豈不可惜？」也作「不郎不秀」。
