本指兄弟虽在家争吵，但一旦遇有外侮，却能共同抵御。典出《诗经．小雅．常棣》：「兄弟阋于牆，外御其务。」后比喻内部不和睦。清．王士祯《池北偶谈．卷七．误献．施允升》：「尝有罗姓者，兄弟阋牆，先生要之家，反覆劝譬，声泪俱下，兄弟遂相抱而哭。」
