  1. 天空。《文选．孙绰．游天台山赋》：「太虚辽廓而无阂，运自然之妙有。」也作「太清」、「泰清」。
  2. 空虚寂寞的境界。
  3. 近代一位僧人的法号（西元1889～1947）。俗姓吕，法名唯心，以字行世。浙江崇德人，十六岁出家，依宁波天童寺寄禅和尚受具足戒；后从杨文会学愣严经；跟苏曼殊学英文，民国元年在南京创立中国佛教协进会以推动佛教改革运动。鑑于当时佛教不振，僧众素质低落，先后创办武昌佛学院、闽南佛学院、汉藏教理院等，培育僧材，对中国近代僧教育贡献很大，为中国佛教改革派的领袖。着有整理《僧伽制度论》、《释新僧》、《真现实论》等。有《太虚大师全书》行世。
