古时宋国人因他种的苗未长高，而用手将它拉高，结果苗却反而枯死了。典出《孟子．公孙丑上》。比喻为求速成而未循序渐进，结果不但无益，反而有害。宋．吕本中《紫微杂说》：「学问功夫全在浃洽涵养蕴蓄之久……非如世人强袭取之，揠苗助长，苦心极力，卒无所得也。」也作「拔苗助长」。
