身体由许多环节组成的无嵴椎动物。通常体节的两侧有一对附肢，附肢有关节，以利运动。体表由表皮所分泌形成的外骨骼构成，除保护内部器官外，还能防止水分散失，使其适应陆地的生活。外骨骼每隔一段时间便蜕皮一次，新分泌的外骨骼柔软富有弹性，可容身体伸缩。昆虫纲、甲壳纲、蛛形纲、脣足纲等均属之。
