  1. 職官名。戰國時趙國設置，負責選任官吏。秦、漢時為武職，掌京師的治安。漢武帝時，改稱為「執金吾」。唐代自德宗以後，由宦官專任護軍中尉，率領神策軍，為皇帝禁軍，防守京師。
  2. 依我國現行的軍制，為初級軍官的第二級，介於上尉與少尉之間。
