lit. cut grass and pull out roots (idiom); fig. to destroy root and branch
to eradicate

要剪除杂草，必须除去根部。语本《左传．隐公六年》：「为国家者，见恶如农夫之务去草焉，芟夷蕴崇之，绝其本根，勿使能殖，则善者信矣。」比喻从根本上澈底除掉祸根，不留后患。《红楼梦．第六九回》：「务将张华治死，方剪草除根，保住自己的名誉。」也作「翦草除根」、「斩草除根」。
