由二種或二種以上的元素，其中至少一種為金屬元素所組成的物質，稱為「合金」。其組織狀態有溶體、共溶混合物、金屬間化合物等。具實用性，如鋼為鐵和碳的合金，黃銅為銅、鋅的合金。由兩種主要元素組成的合金為二元合金，以此類推。
