以土為階，以茅蓋屋。形容生活簡陋。《周書．卷六．武帝紀下》：「上棟下宇，土階茅屋，猶恐居之者逸，作之者勞，詎可廣廈高堂，肆其嗜欲。」也作「土階茅茨」。
