to sit and await success or failure (idiom); to wait to see the outcome of a fight before taking sides
to sit on the fence

冷眼旁观他人的成功与失败而不参与。《史记．卷一○四．田叔传》：「见兵事起，欲坐观成败，见胜者欲合从之，有两心。」明．梁辰鱼《浣纱记．第二一齣》：「言朅囚既历艰难，誓雪耻肯坐观成败。」也作「坐视成败」。
