纲，网的大绳。挈，提起。领，衣领。提纲挈领指撒网要抓大绳，拿衣要提衣领。比喻要抓住重点大纲。《野叟曝言．第二一回》：「若夫提纲挈领，则断推仲景一书。」也作「握纲提领」。
