一個字通行的寫法和本義的字形不同，原來的字形稱為「本字」。有別於假借字、俗字、別字等。如耑，為「端」的本字。《詩經．小雅．六月》：「薄伐玁狁，以奏膚公。」漢．毛亨．傳：「公，功。」可知功為本字，公為功的借字。
