植物名。一般指檀香科檀香屬的半寄生性常綠小喬木。分布於亞洲東南部和南太平洋島嶼上。其株高可達十公尺，部分寄生於其他喬木的根上。但生長緩慢，約需三年其心材方可應用。葉為革質對生，主幹和根部含有黃色芳香油，可蒸餾提取白檀油，用以製造香料、香皂和藥材。木材灰褐色，質密緻而堅韌，可用來雕刻及製飾品、家具，香味可保持數年之久。另外，也有許多非檀香木屬植物的木材，常被用來做為檀香木的代用品，如淡紅色材質的紫檀，即是產於亞洲東南部的豆科紫檀屬植物。
