唐武后命酷吏来俊臣审问周兴，来俊臣遂因与周兴对食之际，假意向周兴请教刑求之道，周提出「请君入瓮，再以炭火烤之」的方法。后来俊臣遂以此法惩治周兴。见《新唐书．卷二○九．酷吏传．来俊臣传》。后喻以其人之法，还治其人之身。《聊斋志异．卷十．席方平》：「即烧东壁之床，请君入瓮。」也作「请公入瓮」、「请兄入瓮」。
