to adopt
to give for adoption (usually to a childless relative)

自己沒有兒子而以兄弟、親戚或他人之子為後嗣，稱為「過繼」。《初刻拍案驚奇．卷一七》：「府尹道：『你還有別的兒子或是過繼的否？』」也作「過房」。
