  1. 天空。《文選．孫綽．遊天台山賦》：「太虛遼廓而無閡，運自然之妙有。」也作「太清」、「泰清」。
  2. 空虛寂寞的境界。
  3. 近代一位僧人的法號（西元1889～1947）。俗姓呂，法名唯心，以字行世。浙江崇德人，十六歲出家，依寧波天童寺寄禪和尚受具足戒；後從楊文會學楞嚴經；跟蘇曼殊學英文，民國元年在南京創立中國佛教協進會以推動佛教改革運動。鑑於當時佛教不振，僧眾素質低落，先後創辦武昌佛學院、閩南佛學院、漢藏教理院等，培育僧材，對中國近代僧教育貢獻很大，為中國佛教改革派的領袖。著有整理《僧伽制度論》、《釋新僧》、《真現實論》等。有《太虛大師全書》行世。
