職官名。周時掌贊書、授法令的事務。戰國時為史官，秦漢並為親近之職，其長官為御史大夫，為漢三公之一，次為御史中丞，掌祕書，兼司糾察，官署稱為御史府，後漢以降稱為御史臺，以中丞為臺長，始專任彈劾。唐御史臺復置大夫，中丞為副，至明改為都察院，以都御史統轄諸御史，清因之。見唐．杜佑《通典．卷二四．職官六》。
