古人指文章休止和停顿处。文中语意完足的称为「句」，语意未完而可稍停顿的称为「读」。书面上用圈和点来标记。唐．韩愈〈师说〉：「彼童子之师，授之书而习其句读者，非吾所谓传其道、解其惑者也。」《聊斋志异．卷七．仙人岛》：「我言君不通，今益验矣。句读尚不知邪？」也作「句度」。
