古人指文章休止和停頓處。文中語意完足的稱為「句」，語意未完而可稍停頓的稱為「讀」。書面上用圈和點來標記。唐．韓愈〈師說〉：「彼童子之師，授之書而習其句讀者，非吾所謂傳其道、解其惑者也。」《聊齋志異．卷七．仙人島》：「我言君不通，今益驗矣。句讀尚不知邪？」也作「句度」。
